Dismiss your reports based on 1:1s that repeatedly don’t make you feel comfortable.
Wait. What?
That’s a surprising takeaway from a talk between Christian Hecker (Founder Trade Republic) and the host Philipp Westermeyer on the OMR podcast. Christian got these insights from Keith Rabois, a general partner at Founders Fund.
Trust your gut feeling when doing 1:1s
Keith recommended keeping track of how you feel about an upcoming 1:1 with your reports. If you find yourself feeling negative about 1:1 with the same report three times in a row, then Keith suggested dismissing the report. This indicates that the chemistry isn’t right between you two and that you should consider to no longer working together.
Does it work?
I never used this approach, but I sometimes really had 1:1s that were not enjoyable at all. The big question for me is: Were they not enjoyable because the person challenged me and moved me out of my comfort zone? Or were they not enjoyable because the other person was simply not a good fit at that time. Not sure.
Takeway
Christian used the three strikes for 1:1s rule and it served him very well. I am not entirely convinced - but gut feeling is important, and I will pay more attention to that rule during my 1:1s in the future.
